B2B SEO and GEO Audit: A Complete Guide to Scope, Evidence, and Deliverables

A useful B2B SEO and GEO audit should answer three business questions: can the right buyers find your company, can the information they find support a purchasing decision, and what should your team fix next?

In this guide, a combined audit means examining your website’s search foundations, coverage of buyer questions, brand facts, and public evidence, alongside observations of how your brand appears in AI answers under defined conditions. The output should be a traceable, actionable plan with a retesting method—not simply a website score or a collection of chatbot screenshots.

If you are buying an audit, focus on scope, deliverables, and acceptance criteria. If you will execute the work, focus on the seven audit areas, sampling records, and remediation example. The approach is intended for B2B websites that need to explain product fit, implementation requirements, and purchasing risks. Platforms, markets, and page coverage should follow the business’s actual needs.

The decisions this guide helps you make: whether to fix an existing blocker or commission a broader diagnosis; which information and permissions to prepare; how to compare proposals; and who will implement and verify the resulting work.

Suggested audit workflow: agree scope → collect pages and answers → check evidence → create tasks → prioritize → implement and verify → retest.

If evidence is missing, retain unknowns and collect more or narrow the claim. If outcomes do not improve, revisit the hypothesis. Record repair completion separately from performance changes.

1. How do SEO, GEO, and AEO audits fit together?

For practical planning, treat SEO auditing as an examination of search discovery and website foundations, and GEO auditing as an examination of brand representation in generative answers and the associated content and sources. AEO is often used when discussing answer presentation and answer-oriented content. This guide uses these as overlapping working perspectives, not three completely separate technical systems.

Google states that SEO best practices remain relevant to its generative search features. Google’s official guide

The benefit of a combined audit is shared evidence. For the same solution page, you can investigate whether it is accessible, whether it answers a purchasing question, and whether selected AI responses cite it. Those checks answer different questions, but their findings can enter one implementation plan.

Working perspective

Main question

Suggested evidence

Useful output

Search foundations

Can important pages be discovered, accessed, and processed appropriately?

Responses, directives, content, internal links, authorized search data

Technical findings and a search baseline

Buyer answers

Does the page resolve an actual purchasing question?

Sales questions, page content, product information, supporting evidence

A question-to-page map and editorial tasks

AI representation

How is the brand described and cited for specified questions and modes?

Complete answers, source URLs, execution conditions

Mention, citation, and factual-accuracy observations

Business handoff

Can a visitor assess fit and take the next step?

Landing pages, contact paths, events, CRM definitions

Conversion-path findings and measurement improvements

Do not convert a traditional ranking into an AI citation rate. Equally, a brand appearing in one answer does not establish that a real buyer saw or endorsed it. Define what was observed before interpreting what it means.

2. When is a combined audit worth doing?

Start with a business question rather than a new acronym. You might have important pages attracting visitors but few relevant inquiries, AI answers describing your product incorrectly, an upcoming redesign or market expansion, or a publishing program that still leaves pricing, compatibility, and implementation questions unanswered.

Different situations call for different scope. A public-data screening can help decide whether deeper work is warranted. A formal combined audit should specify pages, markets, a question panel, evidence delivery, and responsibility for analysis.

Current situation

Recommended starting point

Reason

A core page or inquiry path is visibly broken

Fix the reproducible failure, then establish a baseline

A known blocker need not wait for a large report

Technical foundations appear sound, but content priorities are unclear

Audit buyer questions and existing pages

Find decision gaps before commissioning more similar articles

The brand is misdescribed or confused with another entity

Establish approved facts and a focused question panel

Identify the error and where it appears

Multiple markets, a redesign, or several teams are involved

Combine findings in one remediation plan

Resolve dependencies instead of maintaining disconnected task lists

Product positioning or ownership is unsettled

Confirm business facts and responsibility first

An audit cannot approve product promises for the company

With a limited budget, start with one business unit, one market, and a set of important pages. State that restriction prominently. A narrow sample should not be presented as the brand’s worldwide performance.

3. What should you prepare before the audit?

The minimum inputs cover the business, website scope, buyer questions, and authoritative product information. Authorized data can improve diagnosis. Without it, a public-information review is still possible, but its unknowns must remain visible.

Input

Most useful information

If it is unavailable

Business scope

Products, customer types, markets, languages, immediate priorities

Limit the project to one clearly defined use case

Website scope

Main domain, subdomains, language directories, important pages, redesign history

Build a public inventory and disclose its possible omissions

Buyer questions

Sales objections, quotation questions, implementation concerns, customer terminology

Interview internal teams; label inferred questions as research hypotheses

Product facts

Capabilities, specifications, certifications, pricing conditions, support boundaries

Do not publish unapproved facts

Search and visit data

Authorized Search Console and analytics exports

Leave performance and attribution questions unresolved

Business outcomes

Qualified-lead definitions, opportunity stages, source fields

Agree on definitions before estimating business impact

Competitors

Comparable suppliers and alternatives buyers actually consider

Explain selection criteria rather than choosing weak comparators

Use the minimum access needed. Public-data diagnosis does not require publishing permissions. Sensitive customer material can be redacted, and permission to read data should be separated from permission to implement changes or publish them.

At kickoff, agree on a one-page scope: domains and pages, markets and languages, platforms and modes, questions and observation rounds, data access, deliverables, and whether implementation and retesting are included. If the work grows, revise scope and scheduling explicitly.

4. What should a complete B2B SEO and GEO audit examine?

Organize the work into seven areas, each supported by records another person can inspect. Tools can collect and organize information; conclusions should still connect the evidence to a specific task.

4.1 Technical access and page processing

Choose important pages and representative templates: products, solutions, industries, pricing explanations, case studies, and contact pages. Check response status, redirect destinations, crawling and indexing directives, canonical declarations, internal entry points, and whether the returned content contains the information a visitor needs.

Make the checks URL-specific: whether sitemaps point to valid preferred pages, internal entry points are broken, and mobile visitors can read core information and use contact controls. For multilingual sites, compare language versions, canonical declarations, and hreflang references. Record the device, conditions, and individual metrics for performance checks. These are proposed inspection tasks; any effect on AI citation still needs evidence.

A page opening in a browser is one observation. If the initial response and rendered page differ, preserve both and investigate the capabilities of the relevant crawler or collection method. One unsuccessful retrieval method does not establish that the entire website is invisible to AI.

Blocking crawling through robots.txt does not reliably prevent a URL from appearing in Google’s index. Google’s robots.txt documentation

OpenAI provides separate controls for its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and its training crawler, GPTBot. OpenAI’s crawler documentation

An access recommendation should therefore name the crawler, rule, and intended outcome. Do not recommend opening every training use simply to pursue search visibility, or treat a robots.txt edit as a complete access audit.

Deliverable and acceptance: each issue includes affected URLs, observation time, response or directive evidence, reproduction steps, a proposed change, and a verification method. A repair passes when the same check no longer reproduces the failure. Indexing and citation outcomes require separate observation.

4.2 Search performance and page purpose

With authorized access, examine search data by target market, language, page type, and branded versus non-branded questions. Explain which business pages serve which needs, and whether observed changes coincide with redesigns, content updates, seasonality, or measurement changes.

Do not focus only on the pages with the most traffic. A relatively low-traffic implementation page may resolve an important late-stage concern. A popular introductory article may be less relevant to the current commercial priority. Interpret performance alongside page purpose.

Deliverable and acceptance: a page baseline specifying metrics, source, dates, and filters, with consistent branded and non-branded definitions. Without historical data, describe the current state; do not call it growth.

4.3 Buyer questions and content coverage

Map the decisions buyers need to make to existing pages. The following packaging-equipment example is hypothetical and does not represent customer research.

Decision stage

Example question

Pages to examine

Answer or evidence needed

Understand the problem

Which type of automated packaging approach fits this production line?

Solution guides

Fit conditions, trade-offs, and parameters to confirm

Shortlist suppliers

Which suppliers can support this material and throughput requirement?

Product and industry pages

Specifications, test conditions, and limitations

Compare options

How do changeovers, maintenance, lead times, and total cost compare?

Comparison and cost explanations

Equivalent assumptions, cost components, and responsibilities

Validate risk

How do sample testing, acceptance, and after-sales support work?

Testing, implementation, and service pages

Required inputs, process, acceptance criteria, and boundaries

Check more than keyword presence. Ask whether the answer is accurate, whether its evidence can be inspected, and whether a reader must contact sales to learn the most basic limitations.

One existing page can answer several related questions; each wording variation does not need another article. Google’s guide does not require breaking content into tiny pieces for AI comprehension. Google’s official guide

Deliverable and acceptance: a question-to-page matrix recommending retention, expansion, consolidation, or creation, with reasons. Product specialists should verify technical facts after editing. Check existing value and dependencies before removing or merging pages.

4.4 Brand facts and public evidence

Create an approved fact sheet covering the relationship between company and brand, product names, service regions, support boundaries, and any qualifications or certifications with their applicable scope. Compare it with the website, important public profiles, and collected AI answers, recording specific conflicts.

Translate “trustworthy” into inspectable material. Do specifications state operating conditions? Are case studies authorized? Does research explain its method? Does a certification apply to the current product? Several republications of the same claim do not provide several independent sources.

Google requires structured data to reflect visible page content and avoid misleading information; correct markup does not guarantee a rich result. Google’s structured data policies

Deliverable and acceptance: an approved fact sheet, a conflict register, and an evidence-gap list. Assign a fact owner and correction location to each conflict. After syntax validation, compare markup with visible content rather than merely checking whether the JSON parses.

4.5 Mentions, citations, and accuracy in AI answers

This area requires actual answers. Reviewing a page’s writing can assess content readiness. Discussing observed AI performance requires the question, platform, mode, time, complete response, and source links.

Record four separate events: whether the brand appears, whether the answer links to the official website, whether it explicitly recommends the brand, and whether factual statements are correct. A criticism may count as a mention. An official page cited for a definition may not be a supplier recommendation.

Deliverable and acceptance: raw answers with structured labels, including rules for aliases, citation identification, refusals, and failed collection. A reviewer should be able to trace a report number back to samples, not just view selected screenshots.

4.6 Third-party sources and competitive gaps

Start with observed citations and relevant buyer channels. Examine industry resources, review platforms, associations, media, or communities for missing, inaccurate, or outdated brand information and gaps in publicly verifiable evidence.

Do not automatically turn the websites citing competitors into a distribution list. A source may matter only for one query type or a temporary news event. Record relevance, source quality, editorial context, and a credible action the business can take before assigning priority.

Deliverable and acceptance: a source map containing specific URLs, associated questions, citation context, factual accuracy, and proposed action. Correcting information within your control can be accepted as completed work. Independent coverage and subsequent AI citation are not unilateral deliverables.

4.7 Conversion paths and business measurement

Follow the target page through to a quotation, demo, resource, or contact action. Check whether the visitor understands what happens next. Verify submission, backend receipt, event recording, and sales handoff separately rather than declaring success because a button looks functional.

For production systems, use an authorized testing method or a test environment. If submission has not been tested, distinguish “entry point accessible” from “submission verified.”

Deliverable and acceptance: a journey issue list and event-definition sheet explaining triggers, ownership, deduplication, and available data. Report visits, inquiries, qualified leads, and sales separately rather than combining them under an undefined conversion label.

5. How do you build a repeatable GEO baseline?

Fix the buyer questions you want to study before selecting suitable platforms and modes. Keep a stable comparison panel separate from exploratory questions. The former supports comparisons; the latter helps discover new needs without silently changing the denominator.

Step 1: Build the panel from buyer needs

Use sales records, interviews, search information, and product-support questions where available. Tag each question by role, intent, market, language, and business importance. Inferred questions can participate in an experiment, but their origin should be visible and their relevance reviewed by the business.

Separate branded and non-branded questions. Asking what a named company offers begins from a different position than asking which suppliers serve a category. Combining them can make brand visibility appear stronger than it is in discovery-oriented questions.

Step 2: Record the conditions you can control or observe

Record the product entry point, displayed model or mode, whether search is enabled, language, known location, account and conversation conditions, and execution time. Mark unobservable conditions as unknown rather than implying identical environments.

Schedule repeat observations in advance. Do not keep refreshing until the answer looks favorable. If the platform, mode, or question panel changes, treat the new batch separately and explain comparability.

Step 3: Preserve a reviewable record

Field

What to retain

Question and panel version

Exact wording, category, branded status, version

Execution conditions

Product, mode, search status, language, time, known location and session conditions

Execution status

Valid answer, refusal, timeout, login or collection failure; no brand mention is a label on a valid answer

Raw result

Complete response, available screenshot or sharing evidence, original file location

Sources

Citation URLs and their context; broken links identified separately

Brand labels

Correct entity, alias, mention, recommendation, official-site citation, factual error

Review

Labeler, reviewer or spot-check record, and disputed-label handling

Step 4: Publish the denominator before the percentage

This guide recommends the following working definitions, applied consistently:

  • Brand mention rate: valid answers mentioning the target brand divided by all valid answers.

  • Official-site citation rate: valid answers containing at least one source link to the official website divided by all valid answers.

  • Collection completion rate: valid answers divided by planned executions, with failure and refusal reasons reported separately.

These are proposed reporting definitions, not platform standards. Competitive share or recommendation rate requires an additional counting unit and labeling rule.

Illustrative calculation: 24 questions × 3 platforms × 3 rounds produces 216 planned executions. Assume 204 valid answers, including 30 brand mentions and 10 official-site citations. The simulated mention rate is approximately 14.7%, the official-site citation rate 4.9%, and collection completion 94.4%. Explain the remaining 12 executions; do not count them as valid answers without the brand. These figures demonstrate arithmetic only, not company or industry performance.

Agree on valid-answer and refusal rules before collection, retaining both kinds of raw record. Repeated rounds help observe variation; they do not represent the same number of independent buyers. This illustration is neither a market estimate nor a causal experiment. If reporting factual-error rates, use actually fact-checked answers as the denominator and disclose unchecked records rather than assuming they are correct.

Report results by platform, intent, and market first. A pooled percentage describes that particular panel. It is not the brand’s share of the entire AI market and cannot be converted into a count of prospective buyers.

6. What does an actionable finding look like?

Continue with the hypothetical packaging-equipment exporter. Suppose the audit finds that some answers mention the brand, several cite an old distributor page, and the accessible official product page does not explain testing conditions for a particular material.

Preserve those observations before assigning a cause. A short official page does not prove why it receives fewer citations. Third-party citations alone do not justify a large link-building campaign.

Ask testable follow-up questions: can the official page be retrieved? Does the distributor page contain an actual factual error? Is there approved information about the test conditions buyers need? Open a remediation task once the necessary facts are established.

Task field

Illustrative entry

Finding

The product page lacks material-compatibility and testing information

Evidence

Page snapshot, question-panel records, engineering-approved facts

Impact assessment

Buyers cannot assess whether to request a sample test from the page alone; citation impact remains unverified

Action

Add fit conditions, limitations, test inputs, and acceptance information; link to technical documentation

Responsibility

Product owner confirms facts, editor revises content, website team publishes

Completion criterion

Visible content matches approved facts, the page is accessible, and relevant entry points work

Retest

Run the retained panel again and report response and source changes separately from repair completion

The writing should preserve conditions too. Replace a statement such as “We provide advanced, reliable packaging solutions” with an explanation that selection requires confirmation of material, package dimensions, throughput, and upstream and downstream interfaces, with suitability established through an agreed sample test. This is a writing illustration; the company must approve the actual process and capabilities.

If answers do not change after editing, the content repair can still be complete while the citation hypothesis remains unsupported. Revisit retrieval timing, panel relevance, competing sources, and platform changes rather than repeatedly adding the same keyword.

7. How should findings be prioritized?

Consider business impact, evidence strength, dependencies, effort, and change risk together. Those dimensions provide a more useful work queue than an unexplained aggregate score.

Priority

When to use it

Example

Completion evidence

P0: confirmed blocker or material error

A verified issue directly prevents an important task

Inaccessible critical page, broken inquiry flow, major product misstatement

Reproduced failure repaired and checked under equivalent conditions

P1: demonstrated decision gap

Buyer need and page evidence support the task

Missing fit limits, cost components, or implementation explanation

Approved facts, published content, and a usable answer to the task

P2: opportunity requiring validation

The cause or benefit remains uncertain

New question set, source outreach, structural experiment

Explicit hypothesis, bounded experiment, retest, and keep/change decision

These are proposed work priorities, not search-engine severity categories. If there are no P0 findings, say so. Do not manufacture critical problems to justify the report.

Each task should identify an owner, dependencies, estimated effort range, acceptance owner, and retest date. Template changes, content consolidation, and indexing-directive changes also need a backup and rollback approach.

8. What deliverables should the client receive?

Organize delivery into four connected materials serving budget owners, analysts, and implementers.

Deliverable

Required contents

Acceptance check

Executive summary

Scope, major findings, priority actions, unknowns, next decisions

Important conclusions trace to evidence and tasks

Baseline and evidence package

Page inventory, question panel, raw answers, sources, metric definitions

Selected records can be recalculated and reviewed

Diagnosis and implementation backlog

Findings, evidence, causal hypotheses, actions, owners, dependencies, completion criteria

The implementation team does not have to guess essential requirements

Retesting protocol

Comparison panel, observation window, failure handling, change log, definitions

Later findings remain interpretable when conditions change

A PDF is convenient for reading; editable data is useful for execution. Request both where appropriate, but do not mistake file format for quality. An attractive report without URLs, original answers, or ownership still creates work for the buyer.

Separate delivery acceptance from performance evaluation. The former checks whether evidence, scope, tasks, and a retesting method were delivered. The latter examines subsequent search, citation, and business outcomes. Google’s SEO Starter Guide also states that there is no method that automatically guarantees a first-place ranking. Google’s SEO Starter Guide

9. How should you compare cost, timing, and providers?

Compare scope before total price. A public-page screening is not the same purchase as a project with multiple markets, repeated AI sampling, human review, and implementation support.

Cost or scheduling driver

Question to resolve

Website size

Is coverage based on URLs, templates, or a sample of important pages?

Markets and languages

Is each market checked independently, or is only the report translated?

AI collection

How are questions, platforms, modes, and rounds counted? Are failed runs replaced?

Human analysis

Are facts, citation support, and competitive context reviewed?

Data access

What happens if access is delayed? Can a bounded public review be delivered first?

Implementation

Does the price include editing, development, publishing, or only recommendations?

Retesting

Is it separately priced? Is the original panel retained or replaced?

Estimate sampling work as questions × platforms × rounds, then add page inspection, human analysis, and communication. Person-days describe effort; calendar duration also includes access, engineering coordination, and approval. A proposal should distinguish them.

Ask a provider for one redacted example that connects raw evidence to interpretation, a remediation task, and acceptance. Check whether facts and hypotheses are separated, whether evidence is exportable, and how the team responds when improvement is not observed.

If a provider claims its tool reads Google’s internal ranking or AI-system metrics, investigate that claim; Google states that third-party tools cannot access those internal systems. Google’s official guide

Paid software is not the dividing line between good and poor work. Evaluate coverage, exportability, reviewability, and effort. A report without actual sampling cannot replace an AI baseline; a large sample without interpretation or action is also insufficient.

10. What should happen after the audit?

Sequence implementation around dependencies and explicit completion criteria. The following phases are a suggested work order, not a fixed results timetable.

Establish a reliable foundation. Repair confirmed access, factual, and conversion blockers, and preserve definitions and baseline records. Finish the phase when key repairs have verification records and remaining tasks have a reason and owner.

Fill decision-content gaps. Update product, solution, comparison, cost, and implementation information according to high-priority questions. Completion means approved facts, accessible content, and an updated question-to-page map—not merely a publishing quota.

Retest and maintain external information. Correct profiles within your control, observe the fixed panel, and keep a platform and implementation change log. If performance does not improve, revisit the hypothesis and allocation of effort. One favorable answer should prompt further observation rather than a declaration of sustained growth.

A management update can use three columns: work completed, results observed, and the reason for the next action. Keep repair completion, AI-response changes, and business outcomes supported by their own evidence.

11. B2B SEO and GEO audit FAQs

Do we need GEO work if we already have an SEO audit?

Check whether the existing report includes actual AI responses, source records, factual accuracy, and a fixed panel. If those are missing and AI representation matters to the business, add that scope. Do not repurchase technical work that is complete and still current.

How many questions and platforms should we test?

There is no universal count suitable for every business. Cover important roles, stages, markets, and questions, then choose rounds according to resources. A smaller, reviewable scope is more useful than a large untraceable one. Put all quantities in the agreement.

If an AI answer does not mention us, does that mean our website is not indexed?

No such conclusion follows from that observation alone. It establishes only that the brand was not observed in that response. Investigate the mode, question fit, technical access, relevant index evidence, and sources. Leave the cause unknown if the evidence is insufficient.

Do we need llms.txt, special Schema, or fixed-length answer blocks?

Do not make these universal acceptance requirements. Google says its generative search does not require special Schema and does not use llms.txt to improve search visibility. Google’s official guide

Check the relevant documentation when another system has a specific requirement. Tables, headings, and direct answers can help readers without creating a citation guarantee.

Does a small website need the full scope?

Not necessarily. Start with core product and solution pages, the contact path, and a bounded question panel. Where a critical issue is already understood and has an owner, fix it rather than expanding scope to produce a longer report.

Can we sample one language and translate the findings?

Do not treat translation as evidence about another market. Share methodology and approved facts, but check target-language questions, pages, suppliers, and answers separately. Report market results separately too.

How quickly should we expect improvement?

Separate report delivery, implementation, search processing, AI-response changes, and opportunity creation. Agree on verifiable work for each stage, then define an observation window. Without relevant historical evidence, do not promise a citation increase or sales date.

Does a high tool score mean the audit has passed?

First establish what the score measures, how it is calculated, and what it covers. It cannot cancel out a material factual error, a broken critical page, or missing samples. Accept delivery against agreed evidence requirements; evaluate performance separately.

12. Start with a one-page scope brief

Before commissioning a B2B SEO and GEO audit, document five things: priority products and markets, buyer decisions to support, important pages, known concerns, and available data. Ask the delivery team to confirm the panel, evidence format, deliverables, ownership, implementation boundaries, and retesting method.

You can use this request with an internal team or a shortlisted provider:

We want a combined audit focused on our agreed products, markets, and purchasing questions. Before starting, confirm scope, required access, AI sampling conditions, a sample deliverable, remediation ownership, and retesting. Each important finding should include original evidence, an explained judgment, and completion criteria. Separate audit, implementation, and retesting costs. Identify unavailable evidence rather than recording it as zero performance.

A useful report leaves the team knowing where the problem is, why it matters, who owns it, what completion looks like, and how to test the reasoning afterward. Those questions provide a better acceptance standard than report length or an unexplained score.
